According to Time magazine, the next wave of wearable medical sensing devices may be made from chewing gum. Wearable sensors can monitor health conditions from heart rate to sleep mode, usually made primarily of metal, because bending or twisting often breaks the material because it is not flexible enough.
By incorporating carbon nanotubes into the chewed chewing gum, the researchers created a flexible, stretchable sensor that was worn around the neck to monitor the rate of respiration. Related results were recently published in the Journal of Applied Materials and Interfaces of the American Chemical Society, a new sensor that uses its highly sensitive readings to measure tension and humidity levels.
