Study found that smelling food flavors can increase satiety

The tempting smell of food is often appetizing. However, Dutch researchers have found that there are also ingredients in the smell of food that make people feel full.

This "anti-hunger" odor, after being extracted, is expected to be used to control over-eating and combat obesity.

Show "gas" can eat

The smell of food consists of molecules. Some of these molecules can stimulate the hunger of the brain and cause people to open their appetites; others can stimulate satiety in other parts of the brain and stop people from eating.

Anna Riegersp, a researcher at the Dutch Dairy Fund Research Institute, discovered that when people chew on food, the smell of food in the mouth enters the nasal cavity, stimulating the brain to feel full.

This discovery is expected to be used to create a new generation of "odor food." These scented foods can make people "smell and hungry" and avoid excessive diet and obesity.

"This is an unexpected discovery," the US "Fun Science" website quoted from Riegerspan on the 23rd. "Everyone was surprised and the spirit was in full swing."

The results of this study were published in the November issue of the bimonthly issue of the Journal of Agricultural Chemistry and Food Chemistry.

Exotic

The researchers found that the smell of certain foods in particular can cause people to feel full.

The odor emitted by carbohydrates, foods containing fat or protein is more effective than other foods in causing satiety. Researchers believe it may be because it reminds people that they are eating high-energy foods and avoid excessive diets.

The smell of mixed foods is more satiety than the scent of a single food. Mixing odors may suggest that people are enjoying a rich meal.

In addition, solid foods need to be chewed and swallowed, which virtually increases the time the food releases odors and is more satisfying than liquid foods.

The effect of food odors on appetite is also related to the speed of eating and the size of the food that is bitten by each bite. Slow eating takes longer than fast eating, and the smell of food plays a relatively long time.

Anti-hungry

Researchers are trying to create a drink that emits a "big meal" flavor. This beverage will have a tempting aroma of food, and it will produce a feeling of satiety much more than ordinary beverages.

The researchers plan to make a smell capsule. This capsule can release a specific food odor and make it persistent. They also try to make tough foods to reduce the amount of food each bite can bite and extend the chewing time so that the scent can fully exert its anti-hunger effect.

According to Rigelspoop, people can reduce their appetite by about 10% by controlling their odors. Research is continuing. Researchers hope to analyze the long-term effects of odors on people through long-term observation and comparison.

Although odor therapy can help people fight against obesity, Ruijiesp does not think this can fundamentally solve the problem of obesity.

“This does not fundamentally solve the problem,” said Reijspe. “(Combating with obesity) depends to a greater extent on lifestyle changes.” (Cao Wenju)
