"Smart bricks" can generate electricity, clean water and oxygen on walls

To enable buildings to function as "large-scale living creatures," scientists at the University of West of England have recently developed a "smart brick" that can use microorganisms to recover wastewater, generate electricity and oxygen. Researchers have added microbial fuel cells to these "smart bricks." In the past, researchers have demonstrated that electricity can be generated from urine from microbial fuel cells, insect carcasses, and grassy debris.

Prof. Ioannis Ieropoulos of the University of the West of England’s Robotics Laboratory stated: “Microbial fuel cells are energy converters that use microbial metabolic activity to decompose organic waste and generate electricity. Building microbial fuel modules into building bricks as part of the wall is a novelty. The application will allow us to explore how to deal with household waste, generate useful electricity, and create 'actively programmable' walls in our living environment."

Researchers said that these “smart bricks” can also sense the interior and exterior of buildings. These bioreactor-equipped walls can absorb sewage, carbon dioxide, sunlight, algae, bacteria and nutrients, and in turn, convert them into clean water, oxygen, electricity, heat, biodegradable detergents, biomass, etc. , but these all depend on how they are "programmed."
