Many countries take strict control measures
According to reports, the EU imports more than 1.1 million tons of wheat each year. The EU on May 31 suggested that member countries conduct tests on wheat imported from the United States. Wayne Bacon, head of a wheat trading company headquartered in France, said that the negative impact of GM wheat may widen, causing consumers to "talk about genetic changes."
The United States is the largest importer of wheat in Asia. An official of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Food of South Korea said: “An animal and plant quarantine agency will inspect each ship's agricultural products including wheat whether it contains pests or genetically modified substances... Until now, no genetically modified substances have been found.â€
South Korea imported 2.4 million tons of wheat from the United States in 2012. The US agricultural sector previously confirmed that there is no evidence that GM wheat has entered the market. However, the South Korean side has determined that 90% of South Korea's imported wheat comes from Oregon and must take measures to prevent it.
Counsellor of the Japanese Embassy in the United States, Sa Ka Asahiro told a number of media reporters in Washington that Japan has canceled orders for importing white wheat and feed-grade wheat from the Pacific Northwest, and waited for the US agricultural regulatory agencies to open up more investigation information. "In most countries, unapproved GM wheat is the focus of public concern." Saoka said, "Japan is the same."
"Resistance" wheat grows into a mystery
Although U.S. Department of Agriculture officials insisted that the genetically modified wheat found in Oregon had no hidden dangers to human health, it did not enter commercial distribution channels. However, the Ministry of Agriculture still decided to investigate the causes of the emergence of wheat as soon as possible.
Farmers in Oregon reported in late April that herbicides were used to identify "resistant" wheat plants. Farmers questioned the agricultural authorities and wondered if their wheat would quietly become a genetically modified species. Researchers confirmed after testing that these wheats may be linked to Monsanto's genetically modified herbicide-resistant wheat tested in Oregon between 1998 and 2005. This type of wheat is resistant to certain herbicides to simplify weed removal and increase yield.
In 2005, Monsanto was under pressure from environmental groups to abandon the large-scale planting and production of genetically modified wheat products in the United States. The trial wheat was cleared years ago. A spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture, Ed Colette, said that the staff of the nine subordinate agencies of the Ministry of Agriculture are investigating and collecting evidence, but it is unclear when they can conclude. Monsanto also issued a statement saying it will cooperate with the investigation.
In the past few months, due to the disclosure of a large number of genetically modified components, food and environmental safety groups organized activities frequently. Vermont, Connecticut, and New York State are all enforcing legislation to label "genetically modified signs," and Monsanto and other large biotech companies are strongly resisting this move. The U.S. agricultural company conducts nearly 1,000 trials of GM crops each year, and the experimental fields spread throughout the United States.
