(1) The difference between optical properties and ordinary inks

Since the optical properties of metallic pigments are different from those of ordinary pigments, the optical properties of the produced metallic inks are also quite different from those of ordinary inks. The color of the ordinary ink does not change with the change of the viewing angle, and for the metallic ink, the change of the viewing angle changes the hue and brightness of the metallic ink.

(2) Factors affecting the optical properties of metallic inks

The effect of the metallic ink shining is the result of the combination of specular reflection and diffuse reflection of the metallic pigment. In order to achieve a better metal effect, the specular reflection of the metallic pigment should be increased to reduce the diffuse reflection. The main factors affecting the optical properties of the ink are as follows.

1 The larger the size of the metal pigment particle size, the better the specular reflection effect of the single pigment particle, and the higher the metallic gloss of the metal ink, but its hiding power and dot reproducibility may be deteriorated. The smaller the size of the metal pigment particle size, the better the hiding power and dot reproducibility of the metal ink, but the excessive metallic diffuse reflection causes the metallic gloss of the metallic ink to decrease. The user can select the appropriate particle size according to his own requirements, but the combination should be combined with the specific printing method. Different printing methods require the use of metal inks with different metal pigment particle sizes. Otherwise, there may be cases where the particle size is too large, the ink cannot be smoothly transferred during the printing process, or the particle size is too small and the printing effect is not good.

2 The particle size distribution of metallic pigments is also a factor affecting the optical properties of metallic inks. The particle size of the metal ink generally referred to is generally the average particle diameter D50 of the metal pigment in the ink. For example, a metal ink of 10 μm means that 50% of the pigment particle size is less than 10 μm when tested. In fact, this index is not very accurate. Describe the performance of metal inks.

Many users will find that when you use metal inks from different manufacturers, although the particle size is the same on the technical data, the hiding power and metallic gloss of the metal ink after printing sometimes vary greatly. The particle size distribution of metal pigments in metal inks of different manufacturers is narrow and narrow. The same average particle size, the narrower the particle size distribution, the more neatly arranged the pigment, the better the gloss and hiding power of the produced metal ink. Therefore, the analysis of the particle size distribution on the characterization and quality control of the metal pigment is Very important, it is also an important manifestation of the technical level of different metal pigment manufacturers.

3 The shape of the metal pigment particles in the conventional metal ink is irregular, called cornflakes (corn grain, see Fig. 1), because the shape of each metal pigment particle is irregular and the edges are not smooth, resulting in poor specular reflection of the particles. The edge diffuse reflection is severe, so the metallic gloss and hiding power of the metal ink are also correspondingly poor. Aika uses the latest condensing and grinding technology to produce a new type of silver dollars (silver dollar, see Figure 2). Each of the particles of the metallic pigment has an approximately circular structure, uniform size, good specular reflection effect, and excellent ink metal effect and hiding power produced by the same. Therefore, this new type of metallic pigment has been widely used as soon as it is introduced.
