According to the World Steel Association, global steel consumption in 2011 will increase by 5.9% to 1.36 billion tons.

The World Steel Association (World Steel Association) (April 18) news, the association said that this year and next year the global steel consumption will increase by about 6%, but although China's steel demand will continue to grow, but the increase will appear the first decline.

The association predicts that the global steel apparent consumption this year will increase by 5.9% to 1.36 billion tons, which is higher than the 1.28 billion tons in 2010. The agency also expects that global apparent steel consumption in 2012 will increase by 6% to 1.44 billion tons.

It is expected that China's steel consumption will increase by 5% this year, which is lower than the 5.1% increase in 2010.

The association's director-general, Edwin Baon, said that this year will be the first year that China's steel consumption growth is expected to decline.

He said that China’s steel consumption will continue to grow, but the increase will not be 10% but will be around 5%.

The above expectations were made before the Great East Japan Earthquake last month.

The association said that preliminary estimates of the impact of the earthquake on steel production in Japan may be between 7 million and 10 million tons.
